If you’ve not yet discovered an appreciation for makeup artistry, I can almost guarantee the following will shift your perception.

Behind some of the most iconic moments in pop culture are a team of artistic visionaries that have the power to enhance an endless array of narratives using the face and body as their canvas. The history of makeup continues to evolve, from its spiritual significance in Ancient Egypt, to its globally influential and profitable usage today. Makeup artistry is a boundless form of self-expression. The ancient craft of storytelling that’s woven its way into modern society and will live on into the unforeseeable future. The beauty industry has placed a lead foot on the accelerator and has no intention of lifting it, with the market forecast to surpass $120B in global sales by 2025.

Whether you’re a long-time makeup lover or are just dipping your toes in, GLITCH has curated a dazzling list of makeup artists to watch in 2024.

RE-SHAING THE CANVAS WITH LYNDA FLORAE

Lynda Florae (@lynda.florae) has amassed a following of over 80K on Instagram for her skillful and wickedly clever editorial and abstract makeup looks. Florae’s feed is a kaleidoscopic aura of shapes, pigments and optical illusions. While “no-makeup-makeup” trends sweep the internet, Lynda Florae continuously re-invents the wheel with sweeps of neon, dewy gemstones and metallic flare. Once you enter Florae’s digital space, it’s nearly impossible to leave.

THE ARTIST BEHIND AN EDITORIAL WONDERLAND: CATHYANNE MAC ALLISTER

Working with industry icon Pat Mc Grath, Mac Allister has showcased her broad range of skills time and time again around the world. Mac Allister’s feed is a diverse combination of bold, sharp, loud statements and soft, dreamy strokes of minimalism.

A TEXTURAL DREAMSCAPE: CHIAO LI HSU

Born in China, raised in the Netherlands and currently basd in London, Chiao Li Hsu uses the art of texture to rewrite makeup norms. Li Hsu’s recent work for publication Rogue FashionBook (@roguefashionbook) features model Xie Chaoyu (@xie.chaoyu) with striking red lips and fairy-like lashes contrasted by a fibrous white base. A similar look, this time resembling blades of grass, was created for Revue Magazine on model Nova (@sundaygurll). Chiao Li Hsu’s work has connected her with luxury fashion houses like Prada, Balmain and Loewe, and has adorned the covers of Vogue and W with her eye-catching artistry.

CRYSTALISED DETAIL WITH MARIELLE LOUBET

Makeup artist and consultant Marielle Loubet (@marielleloubet) is a master of detail. Each dreamy look is a pristine representation of Loubet’s love, precision and attention. Hues that seamlessly blend, other-worldly lashes, bold lips and an infectious element of playfulness. Loubet has worked for a growing list of high profile publications such as Vogue, Wallpaper Mag, and Narcisse Magazine. Metallic, satin, glossy, matte, dewy, Marielle Loubet is a master of all.

Makeup artistry fuels the childlike need to play, explore, experiment and imagine. Whether on the cover of a magazine, a film, runway show, or in front of a mirror at home, makeup allows us to create our own bite size, boundless reality.
